About Playa Quimixto

A roadless coastal village south of Boca de Tomatlán, celebrated for its river mouth surf break and a 30-minute horseback or walking trail to a freshwater waterfall.

Playa Quimixto offers a wonderful balance of coastal surf and inland jungle adventure. Accessible only by sea, this peaceful fishing village sits at the mouth of the La Puerta River. The main highlight for most visitors is the trek up the river canyon—on foot or guided horseback—to a magnificent freshwater waterfall with a deep, cool swimming hole and a cliffside palapa restaurant.

How to get there

Located along the roadless southern coastline of Banderas Bay. Access by boat or coastal trail.

  • Board a panga water taxi at the Boca de Tomatlán pier or Los Muertos Pier.
  • Accessible via coastal trail from Boca de Tomatlán.

Local planning notes

  • Rent a local horse or mule near the pier for a classic ride up to the jungle waterfall (~200–300 MXN).
  • Swim in the refreshing freshwater pool directly beneath the cascading waterfall.
  • Surfers: check the river mouth point break during winter and south swell conditions.

Before you go

  • Wear shoes with traction for the waterfall trail, as rocks near the river crossings can be slick.
  • Waterfall flow varies by season; it is strongest during and following summer rains (July–December).

Nearby places and attractions

  • Quimixto Jungle Waterfall (Cascada): Spectacular deep mountain swimming pool reached by a 25-minute jungle walk or horseback ride. (1.5 miles inland)
  • Wiky’s Beach Club & Palapa: Laid-back coastal hangout for ceviche, guacamole, and panga water taxi arrivals. (On the beach)
